About BillKarma
We believe no American should go bankrupt because they couldn't read their hospital bill.
Our Mission
BillKarma was built to give patients the same information that hospital billing departments have — and to make it free. We aggregate hospital chargemaster data under the CMS Price Transparency Rule, Medicare fee schedules, and state billing regulations into tools anyone can use without a billing advocate or attorney.
How Our Data Works
We collect machine-readable price files published by 6,000+ hospitals under the federal Hospital Price Transparency Rule (45 CFR Part 180). Data is updated annually.
We use CMS Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and Outpatient Prospective Payment System rates as fair-price benchmarks. These are public data.
Our error detection uses CMS NCCI (National Correct Coding Initiative) edits, AMA CPT guidelines, and ICD-10-CM coding rules to flag likely billing errors.
Editorial Standards & Accuracy
All guides are reviewed against CMS.gov, KFF.org, and AMA CPT sources before publication.
Guides covering patient legal rights reference specific federal statutes — including the No Surprises Act, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), and HIPAA — where applicable. Data pages display the source and the year the data was collected.
We correct errors when found. To report a factual error, email [email protected].
